Thailand

Songkran festival; Water festival; Thai new year festival (13-15 April)

In the Songkran festival, Thai people usually go to temples in the morning to offer food to monks. They believe that it will bring good luck and happiness through out the year. Some people make the sand pagodas in the temple or the river banks near the temple. Thais believe that splashing water at one another will bring a fertile year by inducing abundant rainfall and cleaning the bad karma from their lives.

There are many places that are popular to play splashing water:
 • In Bangkok : Khao San Road, Silom Road
 • In Chiangmai

March is on the beginning of summer. The temperature is around 30-35 degrees Celsius, which is very warm. Make sure that your clothes are thin and comfortable clothing. We recommend you to bring sandals, swimming suits and sunblock since this time is the right time for all adventures. There may be some rain, but it will cool up the hot weather.

Greetings

The most common greeting you will hear in Thailand is ‘Sawasdee’. This is quite often used for both hello and goodbye. With most of the phrases on this page you need to end with the polite words: ‘Khrab’ for men and ‘Kaa’ for women. There are also a few phrases where I say ‘Phom’ which is ‘I’ for men. Women would normally say ‘Di-chun’ in formal situations and ‘Chun’ among friends.
